Polishing Shakespeare makes Michigan premiere
Having run to widespread critical acclaim at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival and during its Off-Broadway run in New York, Bryan Dykstra's Polishing Shakespeare makes its Michigan premiere! Inspired by true events, the witty comedy centers around a billionaire's attempts to have "translations" made of Shakespeare's works into a more "modern" version of English. Hilariously tackling the tension between intellectual accessibility vs the dumbing down of culture, don't miss this popular play when it arrives at the Meadow Brook Theatre.
Grant is a deep-pocketed tech billionaire ,who decides his money would be well spent funding a massive initiative to "translate" the complete works of Shakespeare… there’s too much poetry and it could easily be simplified into more “correct” English, according to him. Talented playwright Janet believes in the integrity of classical theatre, but when Grant attempts to woo her into the project by offering to wipe out her student debt, she’s left to decide whether she can live with selling-out.
