Dvorak's American-inspired masterpiece
Detroit Symphony Orchestra presents a majestic program celebrating the Americas, headlined by the soul-stirring optimism of Dvorak's New World Symphony. Conducted by Jader Bignamini, the concert also features renditions of Mexican composer Arturo Marquez' Concierto de Otono, featuring the supreme talent of trumpeter Pacho Flores, as well as Argentinian composer Alberto Ginastera's marvelous Variaciones Concertantes. Finally, Dvorak's New World Symphony closes out the program.
Written in response to America's welcoming reception of the composer in the late 1800s, Dvorak's New World Symphony was inspired by the Native American and African American music he witnessed during his visit. The work's spiritual-inspired melodies have made it one of the most popular symphonies of all time, and was even taken along on a cassette by Neil Armstrong on the Apollo 11 lunar mission.
