Enchanting Rinaldo
Not always a fan of productions that reimagine operas, but this was both ingenious and delightful. The idea that Rinaldo is imagining the plot while recovering from brain surgery in a hospital bed works amazingly well, with wonderful effects like converting the hospital bed into a boat. The set is basically very simple but the CGI effects shown in the room window are engaging and keep one's attention. The dancing is entrancing, particularly the song with the bird -- presaged by a fluttering flock of birds in the computer graphics. The singing is terrific and the orchestra is very fine, particularly the harpsichord and theorbo. And of course Handel's music is a delight -- he wrote so many wonderful operas and oratorios.
