Sometimes a single song can spark a whole new story, as in the case of American country music icon Reba McEntire's smash hit cover of Bobbie Gentrie's crossover country anthem 'Fancy'. At the heart of the song in question is the tale of a a woman named Fancy, who looks back on her rags to riches journey, influenced by a mother who implores her to be 'nice to gentlemen' and use whatever means necessary to become successful. This bold narrative is expanded upon in Susan DiLallo and Dan Wackerman's brand new Southern-fried musical, which closes the Meadow Brooks 2019/20 theatre season.
Alongside the titular tune, the musical's score fuses classic country hits like Johnny Cash's 'Walk The Line', Loretta Lynn's 'Don't Come Home A-Drinkin' and even Carrie Underwood's 'Before He Cheats' with a revamped plot about a poor yet talented teen whose not content with her lot in life in Louisiana. Determined to become a country music superstar, Fancy leaves home with her beloved guitar and the clothes on her back, but soon finds the price of fame is sky high.
