Lions and Tigers and Bears, Oh My!
Join the Detroit Symphony Orchestra as led by Leonard Slatkin for a unique trip to the zoo, as interpreted by the witty and joyful Carnival of the Animals by Camille Saint-Saens. Enjoy a cavalcade of elephants, lions, kangaroos, birdlife and even a visit to the aquarium alongside a fabulous program of other colorful pieces from French music, including Offenbach's Gaite Parisienne, complete with Can Can dancers!
Originally composed as a way to amuse himself whilst busy working on his Third Symphony, Saint-Saens never actually released the work in his lifetime, preferring to play private performances to entertain his friends and students. Finally published posthumously in 1922, it has captured the imaginations of adults and children alike and remains his most beloved work.
