Why See Michigan Opera Theatre - The Summer King?
A Moving Modern Opera About Baseball Legend Joe Gibson
From the sandlots of Pittsburgh's North side to the hall of baseball legends, Josh Gibson was considered one of the best power hitters in the history of the game, but could never proceed beyond the American Negro league, prohibited by the color of his skin. Now his awe-inspiring story of determination in the face of racial prejudice is given new life in Daniel Sonenburg's modern opera The Summer King.
The second African American inducted into the Baseball Hall Of Fame, Gibson's journey from obscurity is chronicled in the language of Grand Opera, fashioning the player as a tragic hero in the tradition of Greek Theatre. Sonenburg also calls upon the music of Gibson's era, infusing his score with ragtime, mariachi and big band swing.
Opening night: 12 May 2018
