A wonderful birthday gift and the trials and tribulations of a merry trickster form the subjects of this program featuring two great German composers. Each piece rich but vitally different, learn just what it is that keeps audiences coming back time after time to hear them played.
Preceded by a world premiere from Steven Bryant and Bartok's Violin Concerto No.2, is Wagner's Siegfried Idyll. Created as a birthday present for his wife Cosima, Wagner first played this prototype of the Ring Cycle to her with a small ensemble placed at the bottom of the stairs of the couple's villa, where she woke to its beauty.
Far from beautiful, Strauss's Till Eulenspiegel takes its queue from German folk-hero and all around prankster. Follow the titular Till as he causes a ruckus and eventually ends up on the gallows for his rabble rousing!
